Maps has already had 6 successful international meetings:

1. International Meeting: Cairo, Egypt, in October 1997
2. International Meeting: Genoa, Italy, in October 1998
3. International Meeting: Corfu, Greece, in October 2000
4. International Meeting: Izmir, Turkey, in June 2002
5. International Meeting: Marseille, France, in October, 2004
6. International Meeting: Barcelona, Spain, in October, 2006

All these meetings had a large international participation with contribution from all the five continents. All the world wide experts in pediatric surgery have actively contributed to the success of these meetings and the participation of the Mediterranean countries has been gradually increasing over the years.


  1. OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of the Association are to serve the children of the Mediterranean Area

    1. To act as an international forum of the Mediterranean Paediatric Surgeons
    2. To promote the practice, research and the advancement of study in Pediatric Surgery.
    3. To promote and maintain the highest clinical and ethical standards.
    4. To encourage and arrange regular meetings for the interchange of ideas and sharing of knowledge and experts.
    5. To foster professional relations with Pediatric Surgeons throughout the world.
  1. MEMBERSHIP
     
    1. Mediterranean Members
      Any fully trained Pediatric Surgeon who is registered as a medical practitioner with the registering body of their country of practice is eligible for memberschip, provided that:
        1. Their professional practice is confined to the practice of Pediatric Surgery or largely engaged in pediatric surgical practice or made a special contribution to pediatric surgery.

        2. The nature of their practice is such as to give them special interest in the subject of Pediatric Surgery.

    1. Non-Mediterranean Members:
      Fully qualified surgeons engaged in Pediatric Surgery outside the mediterranean area.

    1. Honorary Members:
      Surgeons or others who have made outstanding contributions to Pediatric Surgery.

    1. Senior Members:
      Former ordinary or non-mediterranean members elected on their retirement from acitve practice.

    1. Associate Members:

        1. Consultants in related specialties other than surgery

        2. Registrars or equivalent trainees in Pediatric Surgery, general
           surgery or other surgical specialities.


Candidades for membership are elected by majority vote of the Executive Committee of the Association.

  1. ORGANIZATION

    The general direction and content of the policy and affairs of the Association are vested in the Executive Committee of the Association.

    The Executive Committee holds office for 2 years and shall consist of a President, a President Elect, Honorary Secretary/Treasurer and 4 members representing the founding countries. Selection of office bearers should be representative of the membership of the Association.
     
    The President will be elected at the General Meeting and will hold office for a period of 2 years. The presidency should rotate from country to country. The President Elect shall become President for the next period.

    The method of election of members of the Executive Committee will be by popular vote at the General Meeting of the Association. Half the members to retire after 4 years but may be eligible for re-election.

    The Executive Committee will meet prior to the General Meeting of the Association and shall conduct the day to day business of the Association.

    The Executive Committee may appoint other members to represent different countries in the Mediterranean region. However, non elected members can not participate in the voting.

    The Honorary Secretary/Treasurer of the Association shall keep records of all meetings of the Association and of its Executive Committee and shall conduct all correspondence in connection with the affairs of the Association. The Honorary Secretary/Treasurer shall receive all moneys due to the Association and shall make all disbursements authorized by the Executive Committee and present the audited accounts at each General Meeting.

     The Executive Committee shall have the power to set up sub-committees and for this purpose may co-opt any member of the Association.

    The Executive Committee decisions can only be ratified if more than half of the Executive Committee members are present (4 members).

    Membership is terminated on:
    1. Resignation from the Association, submitted in writing to the Honorary Secretary.
    2. Failure of payment of due subscriptions for a period of 2 years (membership will be reinstated on payment of arrear subscription due).
       
  2. MEETINGS

     The Association will meet as often as it is considered desirable - at first - 2 yearly. The General Meeting of the Association will include:
    1. The Business Meeting of the Executive Committee.
    2. An open General Meeting. The Association will welcome non members to attend and contribute to the Annual Meeting. A quorum for General Meetings should be at least one representative from half of members of member countries.
    3. An open scientific meeting to be held at various locations within the Mediterranean Area.
    4. A social meeting open to all participants and their guests.

      The MAPS should encourage joint meetings of the individual associations to increase and strengthen relations among individual Mediterranean countries.
       
  3. ACTION

    The Executive Committee may take such action as may be deemed necessary in all matters affecting the legitimate interests of its members, provided that any action contemplated by the Association be conformity with the tamed policy of the Association for the time being in force.
     
  4. ALTERATIONS TO THE CONSTITUTION

    Proposals for alterations to the Constitution may be made by any member of the Association, provided they are submitted in writing to the Honorary Secretary at least 3 months before the General Meeting. All Executive Members must be notified of these proposals. Alterations to the Constitution may only be carried by a 2/3 majority of those present at the General Meeting.
    In the event of dissolution of the Association, remaining assets will be disbursed to a charitable organization.
     
  5. SUBSCRIPTION
     
    1. An annual subscription of Euro 20,00 shall be payable by ordinary members of the Association, Euro 10,00 for associate members.
    2. Subscription fees only to be altered by majority vote at a General Meeting of the Association.
       
  6. JOURNAL and PUBLICATION

    The Executive Committee should establish a Journal in Pediatric Surgery to support and encourage medical research and knowledge in the Mediterranean area.

  8. DISSOLUTION of ASSOCIATION

    The activities of the Association shall be suspended if at any time its membership is less than 10 members.
